How to Broadcast Yourself to Thousands with 2 Easy, Free Tools

Social Media never ceases to surprise me. I was checking out what was trending on Twitter for a client of mine. I know that usually every Monday is #MondayMotivation. My client just opened a Pilates studio and I’m posting a lot of motivational quotes. What surprised me was on Twitter there was a red “Live” button next to the hashtag #MondayMotivation. Lo and behold, it was a guy live streaming on Periscope using the hashtag #MondayMotivation! What a great, easy, and inexpensive way to broadcast yourself, gain exposure, and build a following!

How to Broadcast Yourself to Thousands with 2 Easy, Free ToolsFirst, notice the red “Live” button next to #MondayMotivation. That was the top trend in the U.S. when I grabbed this screenshot with 139,000 tweets! This guy’s live video was on top! Next, note how many viewers he had at that moment — 186. However, the reach/visibility he’s getting is in the thousands.

What you need to do and get to broadcast yourself:

  • Download the Periscope app to your mobile device and set up an account. Connect your Twitter account.
  • Plan ahead what you’re going to talk about.
  • Invest in a tripod and a clamp for your phone or tablet to avoid shaking.
  • Here are some hashtags that regularly trend on their respective days:
    • #MotivationMonday or #MondayMotivation
    • #TravelTuesday, #TuesdayMotivation
    • #WednesdayWisdom, #HumpDay
    • #ThursdayThought or #ThursdayThoughts, #FridayEve
    • #FridayFeeling, #FlashbackFriday
    • #SaturdayMorning
    • #SundayMorning
  • Be prepared to do impromptu streaming if something is trending that is relevant to your business.

Then there are the holidays, awareness and observance days that usually trend on Twitter also.

A word of caution. Always check to see WHY something is trending before you take advantage of it. Never take advantage of a crisis or negative news item.

If you’re not familiar with Twitter or using Hashtags, I have online video classes on both these free tools right here. Get Started Now!

A year from now you may wish you had started today.

An Excellent Example of Clever Viral Marketing

I know you want it! Viral Marketing! That one post, picture or video that everyone who sees it has to share it with their friends.

Here’s an outstanding example of a viral marketing video that has went viral:

And they followed it up with the Darth Vader interview:

An Excellent Example of Clever Viral MarketingDo a search on Facebook for Forth Worth PD and you’ll see that dozens of news networks shared their videos with millions of views and shares. That’s what you want.

OK, you’re probably thinking that it was the fact that it was a police department and that these were professionally done videos. There’s no way that you have the budget for it, right?  Actually, hiring a professional video production company is not as expensive as you may think. I’ve had several professional videos done all under $300. Although, I didn’t have costuming or professional actors in them. That will jack up the cost.

You should have at least one professionally done video.

That video can serve as the intro to your business on your website. It’s proven that visitors to a website stay longer when there’s a video. HOWEVER, don’t have it play automatically when the site loads. Allow the visitor to click on it if they want to watch it. And don’t use Flash!

“Skip the flash and Flash, and let people get right in [to your website] unless you want them to abort their visit or only visit once.” ~ Guy Kawasaki in [ad link] “Enchantment

You can use that professional video also as your YouTube channel ad. Yes, you get a free ad for your YouTube channel. It has to be under 2 minutes. Keep in mind that you have to deliver on what that video promotes. If you say you’re going to be doing weekly videos, then do weekly videos!

Here are some tips and ideas on how to create some viral marketing videos:

  • Brainstorm – get together with your team and throw some ideas around. If you lack a team, hire a marketing coach to help you with ideas.
  • Search for videos from other people and companies in your industry or your competitors and see what they’re doing. Look at their views and likes. Also, how often are they uploading new videos. Fresh content makes Google happy.
  • Use a cell phone or tablet to record – you have high-quality cameras in your mobile devices. Make sure you have plenty of storage space on the device before starting to record. The last thing you need is your phone stopping you in the middle of recording with a “Sorry, you are out of storage space” alert. (That happened to me when I was live-streaming once. Oh, and the battery died, too. So make sure it’s charged!)
  • Use the free video editing software in your computer. Windows 8 and above users have Movie Maker and Mac users have iMovie. YouTube also has a free video editor.
  • Have fun with it.
  • Go for the views emotional triggers:
    • make it funny
    • tug at the heart strings
    • anger them

Remember: People prefer to watch a 3-minute video rather than reading a 300-word blog post.

An Excellent Example of Clever Viral Marketing

In conclusion, don’t over think it. Having a video go viral is usually a fluke. Nevertheless, if you keep creating clever, awesome content, you’ll get the attention of your target audience and the exposure you want.

7 Features of a Viral Video

What’s the secret to creating a viral video?

7 Features of a Viral Video Is it a fluke? Or can a video be made to be so popular that everyone that views it wants to share it? Both.

Sometimes something that starts simply can turn into something viral. Like the ALS Bucket Challenge. No one planned it. It just happened.

Others take a bit more creativity and cleverness.

One more thing – viral videos are easier for a B2C business than a B2B business. When you’re selling a product or service to consumers, you can get a little more daring and risky. Not so much on the B2B side. That doesn’t mean a B2B video can’t go viral — just don’t expect it to.

Here are the main features of a Viral Video:

  1. Make it short – Under 3 minutes
  2. Plan to release it early in the week – you’ll have less competition than on the weekends.
  3. Understand emotions – you want people not to just LIKE your video but to SHARE it with their friends. There are 3 types of emotions:
    1. Awe – cuteness, tug at the heart strings
    2. Amusement – humor, funny, crazy, hilarious, a parody
    3. Anger – it makes you mad enough to do something
  4. Market it – you need to plan how you’re going to promote it – Twitter, Google, Pinterest, Facebook, etc. Cut a 6 sec excerpt for Instagram
  5. Do something controversial
  6. Make other people look good
  7. Think like a reporter – be objective. If you were covering a news story, how would you feature it?

This week, expect all the Super Bowl ads to go viral. Here are a few of the early ones…. some have more views than others – you can see why…..

But I don’t have a budget for a whole production team!

Of course you don’t. And you don’t need one. You can be clever and creative with your cell phone. We’ve got a class! Check out the line-up!

Videos – the Condiment to Your Marketing

By Taylor Luke, Financial Potion, Guest Blogger

Videos-the Condiment to Your Marketing Who doesn’t love condiments? Ketchup, ranch, BBQ, buffalo; all condiments that add more flavor and flare to a meal to make it that much more memorable. Videos are your condiments to marketing.

By now every business owner knows they need a mobile website, and active social media sites to truly survive. However in order to thrive, businesses needs to pour videos onto these platforms like BBQ sauce to a rack of ribs.

It’s proven that when a video is on the top fold of the home page of a website, visitors will stay on the site at least three times longer than when there isn’t a video on the home page. Videos are first impression clones that allow people to get to know you and your business faster; making them one step closer to a confident buying decision. Sure, you probably have a lot of great content on your website, and you need that for SEO, however people retain 60% of the information given in a video versus only 20% when read. If someone decides to only visit your site once, how much information would you like him or her to retain?

People love to use videos for research because it’s a fun and easy way to obtain information.

According to comScore 45% of all Internet users view 1 video a month and the average views 32.2 videos in one month. If your target demographic includes Millennials, then you need to have video to educate them since 98% will watch at least 1 video a day to research content.

In 2006 Google bought YouTube because they knew it would be the future for communication. Google favors websites that have videos on them, and we all know Google runs the search world.

More social media platforms are leaning on video because it’s what people enjoy. Videos that are uploaded to YouTube can be simultaneously posted on Google+ and Twitter as well. Contents posts with a visible video attract three times more inbound links. On Instagram people can post short 15 second videos because of that fact alone. Periscope, a link of Twitter, is becoming very popular. This app allows people to live stream and become a reporter anywhere at anytime.

People want to work with people they know, like, trust and would hang out with. Videos create transparency for a business, and allow viewers to get an authentic view into the culture. A single video can be placed on multiple platforms to clone your message that could provide you a higher ROI than any other marketing tactic. Marketing is like a recipe, stick to a few basic rules, add your own ingredients and personality, then make sure to add plenty of video for flavor to make that meal, or your business, that much more memorable.

Legalities you need to Consider when Live Streaming [Infographic]

Periscope and live streaming bring up some legal issues that you should be aware of.2015 will go down as the year of the Live Streaming apps when Periscope and Meerkat allowed the average smartphone owner to broadcast live from wherever they are.

Here’s a post I wrote with a podcast that explains how you can use live streaming to promote your business.

Live broadcasting from wherever you are brings up some legal issues.

  • You can’t live stream a concert, play or any other intellectual property without written permission.
  • Don’t live stream an event that you paid to get in.
  • Respect other peoples’ privacy – get model releases of people that you might interview or show on the live stream.
  • Get a location release from the owner of the property where you’re broadcasting if it isn’t yours or your company’s

This infographic from lawyer Kerry Gorgone highlights some main points.

Get Permission to Use People in Pictures and Videos

Get Permission from People in Pictures & VideosWe all know that using pictures and videos when marketing on social media works. Especially action shots, video testimonials, customers using products. If you use their likeness (face) in promoting yourself or your company, you must have their permission in writing. A verbal “sure” is not enough. That person may change their mind later on and sue you for using their picture or video in your marketing or advertising. Even children need to have a model release signed by a guardian.

You have to get permission to use people in pictures and videos. Ruth Carter, an attorney in Phoenix, explains why.

Here a sample model release you can edit for your business. Make sure you have everyone who is going to be in the picture or video sign one.

Oh, and you can’t just grab any picture off Google or Bing images either. Here are 7 Sources of Free High-Quality Pictures.
