In the last 17 days I’ve attended 9 live networking events! From chamber lunches to evening mixers, I’ve told my story countless times, almost lost my voice, came home with achy feet and a stack of business cards. What did I accomplish? I know I got the word out of my social media classes. To how many people? Well, not counting the folks that already know me that I ran into, I probably spoke with 50 new people. Some told me that they needed help with their social media, some told me that they knew someone who could use help. Who will take action? I don’t know. How do I follow up with them? Email and Social Media Networking.
In this Wednesdays with the Wiz video, I discuss the difference between Social Media Networking and Live Networking and how they work together.
When I come back from a live networking event, within a day or two, I search for the people whose cards I have on LinkedIn. LI is a professional network. It’s like live networking but online and it’s open 24/7. It’s my virtual Rolodex. Problem is, not everyone has an updated profile and not everyone has a recent picture. It’s hard to guess if it’s the person I met if there’s no picture. Sometimes there’s more than with person with that name. Sometimes more than one person with the same name in the Phoenix area! It’s not who you know, it’s who your friends know!
Between the time that I recorded this video and my writing this post, that video had a reach of 126. In social media terms, that might seem low, but compared to the 50-70 people that I met going to 9 networking events, traveling to North Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, North Phoenix, Peoria, Downtown and the Biltmore area; besides drive time and spending between 1.5 to 2 hours at each event. Wow! It took me 18 minutes to record that video and about the same time writing this post and then maybe another 30 minutes creating the email that’s going to send this post and the previous one to over 2200 people. Now that’s reach!
When it comes to just the investment of time, which one do you think is going to bring me more ROI (return on investment)?
You probably think that you know what you’re doing when it comes to social media networking and using it to market your business. I bet you don’t. I bet you are making at least 20 mistakes that are listed in my new ebook! Go see for yourself….
