Top 10 Best Social Media News for Dec. 16, 2016

Well, one of the hot items in social media news this week is Donald Trump‘s usage of Twitter to announce cabinet choices before telling the reporters huddled in the lobby of Trump Tower. I find it hilarious that the news media has to rely on Twitter for the latest news on PEOTUS (President-Elect of the United States)! Goes to show you, you can’t ignore Twitter.

In other news, Facebook is trying to filter out fake news. Good luck with that. They’re partnering with Snopes, ABC News (?), Politfact and FactCheck.org to help weed out fake stories. Anybody can put up a blog or online “newspaper”, write a story and call it news. Whether it’s true or not, it’s reader beware. So before you click “share” on Facebook, check to see if it’s flagged as potentially fake.

With that out of the way, here’s this week’s Social Media News that You can Actually USE!

  1. Finally going mobile-friendly, but on a collision course with Google’s mobile-first index [Case Study] – I put this one at #1 because THIS IS IMPORTANT! If you don’t understand what’s going on with this, send this to your webmaster. “Google has clearly explained that site owners should make sure their mobile URLs contain the same content as the desktop pages. Those mobile URLs will be the ones used for ranking purposes and to understand structured data.” And I thought the blocking of sites with popups on mobile was bad!
  2. 5 Influencer Marketing Myths from 2016 – Influencer marketing is when you get someone that your target market respects, with a lot of followers, to endorse or promote your brand, product or service.
  3. Instagram Users Can Finally Save Posts – One of my pet peeves with Instagram is that you can’t share a post. You still can’t, but this allows users to save posts like you can on Facebook. So, marketers, make sure to brand your Instragram pictures with your logo and/or your website URL so when users look back at what they’ve collected, your branding is front and center.
  4. Instagram Live Streaming Now Available for U.S. Users – Come on. Like you didn’t see this one coming. With the runaway success of Facebook Live Video, it was only natural that they migrate the live video feature to Instagram.
  5. Facebook Pages: Updated for Mobile, Better for Business – I’m sure you’ve noticed that your Facebook Business page has a slightly different look. It’s all because of the increased mobile usage. Oh, and BTW, Facebook in 2016 surpassed 1.7 Billion Monthly Active Users! Truly the most popular social network. I call them “Big Daddy”.
  6. Why You Should Use Tumblr for Marketing [Infographic] – You haven’t seen me mention Tumblr much, but it’s still active (Yahoo’s ownership didn’t kill it, surprisingly enough). Nevertheless, if you’re trying to reach the under 40 market, you need to consider adding Tumblr to your marketing mix.
  7. What does the Consumer Review Fairness Act mean for consumers and online reviews? – If this bill signed by either Obama or Trump, you will not be able to sue a disgruntled customer for writing a bad review online.
  8. The Next Wave of eCommerce: Instagram’s Shoppable Posts – “Buy Now”! Pinterest has them. Facebook has them. Now Instagram has them. Created to catch the impulse shopper. “I gotta have those boots!” People can shop right from Instagram. The ad connects to your shopping cart. Yes, it’s paid advertising, but when done properly, those impulse shoppers are the ones to go after. Don’t make people have to think too much about making a purchase.
  9.  The Best-Performing Words in Holiday-Themed Email Subject Lines – Interesting and very timely!
  10. Facebook Releases New ‘Parents Portal’ to Help Parents Educate Kids on Social Media Use – Trying to combat bullying and harassment.

Wow! This week I uncovered some important and critical news. I have no idea what will be out there for the next two weeks over the holidays, but I will be digging and weeding through whatever’s there. I’m going to start using different “themes” each month for my regular blog posts. January will be “Tips on what do to and not do in 2017”! Stay tuned!

What is Content Marketing?

What is Content Marketing? You maybe asking yourself, “What is Content Marketing?”  The short answer is blogging. Yes, blogging is the basis for in-bound marketing and it is how you build your following on the social media networks. Blogging connects you to your target audience and positions you as an expert in your field – a trusted source of information. The trick is to blog about what you know – which is your business (service or products).

The keys to success for your blog are:

  • Keep it Short and Simple (KISS) This means approx. 300-500 words, using simple language, and not industry jargon
  • Always use a graphic or video
  • Use an editorial calendar
  • Write for your target audience – what will solve their problems or make their lives better.
  • Write in natural language but with the search engine in mind.
  • Blog at least once a week, 2/3 times a week is optimal!

What are other types of Content Marketing?

Blogging isn’t the only form of content marketing

  • Videos
  • Podcasts
  • Infographics
  • Pictures
  • Shared content from trusted sources that is relevant or related to your business.

The ultimate goal of content is to offer your target market the information they are seeking while getting exposure, establishing credibility and building trust.

People buy from whom they know and trust!
